Google Ads vs SEO for Personal Injury Firms When a Click Costs $200 or More
Real October 2026 Google Ads click costs for injury searches, what they mean for cost per signed case, and when paid search earns a place next to SEO.

Google Ads buys a position on the results page today and charges for every click; SEO builds positions that don't charge per click but take months to earn. When a click on "truck accident lawyer" runs about $509 (Google Ads data from October 2026), ads make sense for a firm that needs cases this quarter, has intake that converts quickly, and can fund enough clicks to learn what works. SEO makes sense for any firm that expects to be practicing in the same market two years from now. For a firm that can afford both, the useful arrangement is ads on the terms SEO hasn't reached yet, and less ad spend on the terms it has.
What injury clicks cost
These are US cost-per-click figures for searches injured people make, from Google Ads data pulled in October 2026. Search volumes are shown where we have them. Your city will differ, sometimes a lot, and the numbers move every month.
| Search | Cost per click | Monthly US searches |
|---|---|---|
| uber accident lawyer | $584 | not shown |
| truck accident lawyer | $509 | 49,500 |
| motorcycle accident lawyer | $330 | 22,200 |
| accident lawyer near me | $290 | not shown |
| slip and fall lawyer | $262 | 12,100 |
| car accident lawyers | $246 | 246,000 |
| rideshare accident lawyer | $241 | not shown |
| wrongful death lawyer | $205 | 18,100 |
| injury lawyer | $194 | not shown |
| personal injury lawyer | $171 | 201,000 |
| dog bite lawyer | $155 | 14,800 |
| work injury lawyer near me | $141 | not shown |
| personal injury attorney | $129 | not shown |
| workers comp lawyer | $106 | not shown |
Two patterns are worth noticing. The most expensive clicks are the most specific ones; one likely reason is that truck and rideshare crashes often involve commercial insurance, which raises what a case can be worth. And "attorney" versions can cost less than "lawyer" versions of the same idea, which is a reason to check the whole term list before you set a budget.
From click to signed retainer
A click buys a visit. To get to a signed case, the visit has to become an inquiry and the inquiry has to become a retainer. Here is an example chain with invented rates, on the "motorcycle accident lawyer" price above:
| Step | Example rate | Cost at this step |
|---|---|---|
| Click | $330 | |
| Inquiry (1 in 8 clicks) | 1 in 8 | $2,640 per inquiry |
| Signed case (1 in 3 inquiries) | 1 in 3 | $7,920 per signed case |
Change either rate and the result moves a lot. If the landing page converts 1 in 5 clicks instead of 1 in 8, the cost per signed case falls to $4,950 on the same click price. That is why the landing page and the intake desk matter as much as the bid. Our click-cost equivalent tool lets you put your own rates into this chain for any term.
When Google Ads makes sense
- You need cases in the next 90 days. SEO rarely produces a meaningful number that quickly in a competitive market.
- You have a page built for the ad. A specific landing page for the case type and city, with a short form and a clear next step.
- Someone answers. Inquiries from paid clicks go to a person who responds quickly, including evenings and weekends, because the person who clicked your ad may also have clicked two others.
- You can fund the test. A handful of clicks at $300 each tells you nothing. Plan for enough volume to see a few signed cases before you judge.
- You're entering a new case type or a new city and want to learn which searches sign before investing in pages for them.
- Your own firm name is being bid on by competitors, and a small brand campaign keeps your name at the top of your own results.
When SEO is the better dollar
- You plan to be in this market for years. Positions earned through pages, links, reviews and a sound profile keep working between invoices.
- Your target case types have clicks so expensive that one month of ads would fund a long stretch of SEO work.
- The searches you want are local. The map pack sits above organic results for many "near me" and city searches, and no one pays per click for a map position.
- Your firm already ranks on page two for some terms. Moving existing pages up tends to cost less than buying the same position every day.
- You want the questions people ask before they choose a lawyer, such as how recorded statements work, to bring people to your site. Those searches are rarely worth bidding on and are well suited to content.
What a side-by-side comparison misses
Ads stop the day the budget stops. SEO positions decay slowly if the work stops, but they do decay, especially in a metro where competitors keep publishing and building links. Ads give you precise data on which searches sign. SEO gives you less precise data but compounds. Ads carry advertising-rule obligations of their own, since the ad copy is a communication about your services under your state's version of Rule 7.1 and Rule 7.2. Your state may also have views on bidding on competitors' names, so check with your bar before you try it.
Running both without paying twice
- Start with the search terms report from your ads account. It shows the actual phrases that triggered your ads and which ones produced inquiries.
- Build or improve organic pages for the phrases that signed cases. The ads have just told you what to write.
- As those pages reach page one and your profile holds a map position for the same phrase, test lowering the bid on that phrase in that area. Watch inquiries for a few weeks before cutting further.
- Keep ads running on the terms and cities where organic positions are still out of reach.
- Review the split every quarter, using cost per signed case for each channel rather than cost per click or cost per lead.
This is the practical middle ground between "ads only" and "SEO only", and it is how we think about paid and organic search together on our personal injury advertising page. For the wider question of why the bidding is so intense in the first place, see why personal injury lawyers advertise so much.
