Personal injury lawyer advertising, compared by cost per signed case
TV, billboards, Google Ads, bought leads, referrals and search all compete for the same injured person. Here is how each one charges, what it buys, when it stops working, and which advertising rules trip it up. We sell one of them, and we say which.

Why injury firms are the heaviest advertisers in law
A personal injury firm works on contingency. It earns a share of the recovery, often a third or more, and only when the case resolves. That means one strong case can pay for a great deal of advertising, and a firm that signs a few more good cases a month can outspend its neighbors indefinitely.
The other half of the equation is timing. Nobody shops for an injury lawyer in advance. People look in the days after a crash, a fall or a death in the family, and they tend to call one of the first names they recognize or find. So firms pay to be remembered (TV, radio, billboards) and to be found (search ads, search rankings, directories).
Both kinds of spending push prices up. Google Ads is an auction, and when every firm in a metro bids on the same searches, the price of a click climbs to what the most profitable firm can afford. The figures on the right are what a single click cost in October 2026.
The question that cuts through it: cost per signed case
Impressions, clicks, calls and leads are all steps toward the only number that pays the bills: signed cases, and the fees they eventually bring. Each channel should be judged by what it costs to sign a case through it. A $40,000 TV flight that signs ten cases costs $4,000 a case; Google Ads at $250 a click, with one in ten clicks calling and one in five calls signing, costs $12,500 a case. Those numbers are an example, not a benchmark. Yours are what matter, and our cost per signed case calculator lays them side by side.
| Search | Cost per click |
|---|---|
| uber accident lawyer | $584 |
| truck accident lawyer | $509 |
| motorcycle accident lawyer | $330 |
| slip and fall lawyer | $262 |
| rideshare accident lawyer | $241 |
| wrongful death lawyer | $205 |
| injury lawyer | $194 |
| dog bite lawyer | $155 |
| workers comp lawyer | $106 |
These are the searches injured people make. Ranking for them organically costs nothing per click.

How each advertising channel charges, and what to watch
Rule numbers are the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Your state's version is the one that binds you, and some states add their own requirements on top.
| Channel | How you pay | What you get | When it stops | Rules to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TV and radio | Production plus airtime, booked in flights | Reach and name recognition across a market | Recall fades after the flight ends | Dramatizations, actor portrayals and "results" claims are the classic 7.1 trouble spots; many states add their own disclaimer rules |
| Billboards | Monthly per board, often on multi-month terms | Repetition along the routes people drive | The day the board comes down | Short copy invites overstatement; "the best", "#1" and nicknames that imply results are common problems |
| Google Ads (search) | Per click, at auction prices | A visit from someone searching right now | The moment the budget runs out | Ad text is advertising under 7.1 like anything else; landing pages need the same care |
| Bought leads | Per lead, per call, or per signed case | A contact, sometimes shared with other firms | When you stop buying | Paying for recommendations (7.2) and sharing fees with nonlawyers (5.4) are the questions to put to your bar before signing per-case deals |
| Referrals | Relationships and, between lawyers, referral fee agreements where your state allows them | Pre-sold clients, often strong cases | Slowly, if you stop maintaining the relationships | 7.2 limits giving anything of value for a recommendation; lawyer-to-lawyer fee splits have their own rules |
| Organic search and the map pack | Monthly work on pages, links and your profile | The same searcher as the ad, with no per-click fee | Gradually, if the work stops and competitors keep going | Your website is advertising too: every page we write starts from 7.1 to 7.3 and your state rules |
Where search fits next to the ads you already run
SEO is not a replacement for every channel. A firm with a strong TV presence still needs people to find it when they search, and a lot of brand advertising ends in a search: someone sees the billboard on the way home, then types the firm name or "truck accident lawyer" plus their city into a phone. If a competitor ranks above you for that search, part of your billboard budget is working for them.
What search does better than any paid channel is keep the cost of each visit near zero once you rank. The work is real and ongoing, case-type pages, local signals, links, but it isn't billed per click, and a page that ranks this year usually keeps some of its value next year even if you scale back.
It is slower. Rankings for competitive injury searches take months, and how many months depends on your metro and who you are up against. That's why many firms keep some paid search running in the areas where they don't rank yet, then compare cost per case as the organic positions come in. The full picture of how the work runs is on our personal injury lawyer SEO page, and how it fits a wider plan of marketing for personal injury lawyers is on the marketing page.
Attorney advertising rules apply to every channel, including your website
Truthful lawyer advertising has been protected speech since the Supreme Court decided Bates v. State Bar of Arizona in 1977, but it is still regulated, and injury firms draw the most attention. The ABA Model Rules most firms meet first:
- Rule 7.1: no false or misleading communication about your services. Past results presented without context can mislead.
- Rule 7.2: limits on paying for recommendations, on calling yourself a certified specialist, and a requirement to include a responsible lawyer's or firm's name and contact information.
- Rule 7.3: limits on live person-to-person solicitation of a specific injured person.
Many states go further, with required disclaimers, labels, or advertising review. Some state bars, Texas and Florida among them, run formal review or filing programs for certain advertisements. Your firm is responsible for its own compliance. We write every page to the ABA defaults, adjust to your state when you tell us which, and send it to you for approval before it goes live.

A worked example, labeled as one
What a truck accident click has to turn into
At $509 a click, suppose one visitor in eight contacts your firm and one contact in four becomes a signed truck case. That is 32 clicks, or about $16,300 in ad spend, per signed case. Swap in your own contact and sign rates and the number moves a lot, which is the point: know it before you scale any channel. If you rank organically for the same search, those 32 visits cost no click fees at all.

FAQ
Personal injury advertising questions
Why do personal injury lawyers advertise so much?
Because the economics reward it. An injury firm is paid a share of the recovery, so one well-chosen case can fund a lot of advertising, and the people who need a lawyer are only looking for a short time after an accident. Firms compete hard to be the name they remember or the first result they find. That competition is also why the channels are expensive.
Was it ever illegal for lawyers to advertise?
Yes. For most of the twentieth century bar rules banned lawyer advertising. In 1977 the US Supreme Court held in Bates v. State Bar of Arizona that truthful advertising by lawyers is protected commercial speech. States can still regulate it, which is why every state has rules against false or misleading claims and many add disclaimer, labeling or filing requirements.
Do billboards work for personal injury lawyers?
They can build recognition, but they are hard to measure, and the effect usually shows up somewhere else: people who saw the board later search your firm name or the case type. If you run billboards, track how every signed case found you, and make sure you rank when those people search. A billboard that sends people to Google, where a competitor ranks first, is paying for someone else.
Should we stop Google Ads once we rank organically?
Not automatically. Compare cost per signed case. If your organic position for a search is strong, the ad on the same search may be buying clicks you would have had anyway, so test pausing it in one area and watch signed cases. Where you don't rank yet, ads can fill the gap while SEO catches up. We don't manage ads, so we have no reason to tell you either way.
What is the cheapest way to advertise a personal injury firm?
Per signed case, referrals and organic search tend to be the cheapest, but neither is fast. Referrals take years of relationships; search takes months of work. Paid channels buy speed. Most firms use a mix, and the useful question is which channel produces your signed cases at the lowest cost right now, which is what our cost per case calculator is for.
